How big is my oil tank?

Knowing the size of your tank helps you order the right amount of oil. Here is how to find out, with a calculator to help.

Finding the size without measuring

The easiest way is to find a record of your tank. Try these first.

  • Look for a label or plate on the tank. It is usually on the side or near the lid. It often shows the make, the model and the size in litres. If it shows two sizes, use the smaller one.
  • Look at the paperwork from when the tank was fitted, such as the installer's certificate or the receipt.
  • Ask the oil company that last delivered to you. They often keep a note of your tank size.
  • If you know the make and model, search for it online. The maker's website will show the size.

Stay safe

Never climb on your tank or lean over it. If the label is hard to see or reach, ask someone to help you.

Measuring your tank

If you cannot find a record, you can measure your tank with a tape measure. Measure the outside of the tank at its widest points. You can use centimetres or inches.

The walls of the tank take up a little space, so the calculator gives you a close guess rather than an exact size.
